Rising Number of Serious Motor Vehicle Collisions in the Greater Toronto Area

Since 2024, the Greater Toronto Area has experienced a troubling rise in serious motor vehicle collisions, highlighting a growing safety concern on its streets. Incidents involving significant injuries and fatalities have underscored the increasing danger faced by commuters and residents alike.

As authorities grapple with the complexities of urban traffic management and driver behavior, these incidents serve as stark reminders of the ongoing challenges in ensuring road safety across the region. Understanding the causes and impacts of these collisions is crucial in addressing this pressing public safety issue.  Here are a few startling examples:

  • On February 18, 2024, in Scarborough, a 19-year-old man on a Kawasaki motorcycle collided with a Subaru sedan at Ellesmere Road and Birkdale Road intersection. The motorcycle rider sustained life-threatening injuries and was rushed to the hospital.
  • On February 18, 2024, in Rexdale, a car crashed into a house minutes later, injuring multiple individuals. One pedestrian was dragged and pinned under the car, suffering life-threatening injuries, while another pedestrian and occupants of the Jeep sustained non-life-threatening injuries. Police are examining the incident, which also involved the Jeep colliding with the front steps of the home.
  • On February 18, 2024, on Bayview Avenue in Toronto, a 19-year-old woman cyclist veered into the path of a Toyota RAV4, leading to a collision where she was thrown onto the road and critically injured. A Mercedes SUV, believed to be following the Toyota, also struck the cyclist before fleeing the scene.
  • On April 19, 2024, a multi-vehicle collision occurred near Highway 27 and Belfield Road around 4 a.m., resulting in five individuals being transported to hospital. According to Toronto police, three individuals were taken to a trauma centre due to serious injuries, while another adult and a child were transported to a local hospital with minor injuries.
  • On May 11, 2024, a male driver was trapped in his vehicle for nearly 45 minutes following a collision with a parked car and a hydro pole. The incident occurred on Yonge Street north of Steeles Avenue. Emergency response crews managed to extract the driver in less than an hour after the crash. Paramedics transported him to the hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
  • On, June 17, 2024, at approximately 10:10 a.m., police received a report of a personal injury collision at Albion Road and Claireport Crescent in Toronto. It is reported that a Nissan sedan was traveling eastbound on Albion Road, while a transport truck was traveling westbound on the same road. The Nissan sedan collided with the transport truck on Albion Road, west of Claireport Crescent. Tragically, the driver of the Nissan sedan was pronounced deceased at the scene of the accident.
  • On June 17, 2024, one-person sustained injuries in a three-vehicle collision in Markham. York police responded to the incident at Don Mills Road and Simonston Boulevard, near Steeles Avenue and Highway 404. Among the occupants involved in the crash, at least one suffered serious injuries.
  • On June 29, 2024 in North York, emergency crews responded to a serious two-vehicle collision at Don Mills Road and Gateway Boulevard involving a 2017 silver Infiniti and a 2009 black Infiniti, both traveling south. As a result, the black Infiniti, driven by a 64-year-old man, veered off the road and struck a light pole. The 30-year-old driver of the silver Infiniti sustained life-threatening injuries and was transported to a trauma centre, while the 64-year-old driver of the black Infiniti was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
  • In Toronto, a tragic accident occurred on the Gardiner Expressway on July 2, 2024, resulting in the death of a 40-year-old woman and severe injuries to several others. The incident involved a collision between two vehicles, after which one driver fled on foot but was later apprehended. The suspect, , has been charged with impaired operation causing death and other serious offences related to the accident. The incident left one person dead and several others hospitalized, highlighting the severe consequences of impaired driving.
  • On July 6, 2024 a motorcyclist was critically injured in a collision in Mississauga after colliding with another vehicle collided on Dixie Road between Rathburn Road and Burnhamthorpe Road East. The motorcycle rider was taken to a trauma centre with critical injuries.
