Woman using an electric wheelchair struck on Montreal Road

CTV News Ottawa is reporting that a woman using an electric wheelchair was struck on Montreal Road near St. Laurent Blvd in Vanier on Saturday January 18th.  She was reportedly transported to the trauma centre at the Ottawa hospital.

Auger Hollingsworth is currently working for two different clients who were also struck at or near that intersection while using electric wheelchairs.

For legal purposes, a person using a wheelchair is treated as a pedestrian and has the same rights as a pedestrian when crossing the street, especially in the cross walk.

We wish this woman a speedy recovery and remind road users in Ottawa to watch for wheelchairs when entering intersections.  The height and speed of an electric mobility device may not be what you are used to looking for.  You still need to see it.
