Ottawa Man Injured When his Nissan lands in Rideau Canada
On November 8, 2012, a man in his twenties ended up in the Ottawa hospital after his car dropped into the Rideau Canal shortly after 4 am at Colonel By Drive between the Heron Road Bridge and University Drive.
The Ottawa Citizen reports that the driver’s Nissan Altima slid about 25 metres across the grass, hit a retaining wall, then fell into the canal where it rolled for 25 metres before coming to a stop.
Emergency services said that there was only one person, a man in his late 20s in the Nissan. No other vehicles were involved in this single vehicle accident.
The injured driver man was transported to the Ottawa Hospital Trauma Centre with injuries to his lower body and suffering from exposure to the cold.
In a single vehicle accident where there are serious injuries, an injured driver has recourse to his or her statutory accident benefits (also called no-fault benefits). The driver’s own car insurance should pay a medical rehabilitation benefit and possibly an income replacement or other benefits, depending on the severity of the injury.
