Ottawa Accident Lawyer: Whiplash Injuries

Ontario automobile accidents and whiplash

One of the most common injuries suffered by individuals in car accidents is whiplash.  Whiplash most often causes pain in the neck area and is caused by a rapid acceleration-deceleration force, such as what happens when a vehicle is moving at a fast speed and then quickly stops.  It also commonly occurs when the injured person’s vehicle is stopped and is hit by a moving vehicle from behind.  As Ottawa personal injury lawyers, we have had a number of clients who suffered from whiplash, some of whom were able to file a claim for their injuries.  If you were recently in an Ontario automobile accident you may be entitled to compensation as well.

Whiplash is usually a minor injury, with the affected individual feeling discomfort and some pain in the neck and shoulder area for a few days or weeks.  It often doesn’t impede normal day-to-day activity, but in some cases, whiplash can be more severe with discomfort and pain becoming chronic and lasting for years after the initial accident.  Some of the initial symptoms of whiplash include: headache, neck and shoulder pain and/or stiffness, dizziness, and jaw, arm or back pain.  Some of the more serious symptoms, and those that can become chronic, can include depression, stress, sleep disturbances, and post-traumatic stress disorder.  As with all personal injuries, it is important to receive medical attention as soon as possible after the accident, as well as follow up care if your symptoms worsen or if new symptoms occur.

If you experience some of these symptoms you may have whiplash but in order to medically determine the nature of your injuries, your doctor will likely perform several tests.  They will examine your head and neck to see if there are any injuries.  They may also order that x-rays be done and in more severe cases, your doctor may recommend wearing a collar around your neck to provide stability and support.

If you have been injured in an Ontario car accident, you may be entitled to compensation for your injuries.  Contact the personal injury lawyers at Auger Hollingsworth to find out if you have a legal case to pursue.
