First Snowfall Brings Hundreds of Collisions Across the GTA

The first snowfall of the season arrived early in the Greater Toronto Area and quickly caused widespread disruption on major highways. The OPP reported more than 300 collisions on routes including Highway 401, Highway 400, Highway 404, Highway 427, and the QEW. Even minor snowfall can create a ripple effect on these high volume corridors, particularly during morning and evening commutes.
Drivers were caught off guard by rapidly changing conditions. Pavement that looked wet was actually icy in places, lane markings were obscured, and many vehicles had not yet transitioned to full winter readiness. On ramps and overpasses, such as those connecting to DVP, Gardiner Expressway, and the 403, freezing occurred earlier than expected, reducing traction with little warning.
The increase in collisions during the first storm is an annual pattern. Early winter challenges even experienced drivers.
Why the First Storm Is So Disruptive
- Traffic volumes offer little margin for error
- Bridges, ramps and expressway interchanges freeze more quickly
- Drivers are still adjusting to longer stopping distances
- Rapid temperature drops create flash freezing on shaded stretches of roadway
Tips to Stay Safe as Winter Driving Begins
- Lower speeds gradually when conditions start to change
- Avoid sudden lane changes on highways like the 401 and 427
- Increase travel time to reduce pressure when roads slow down
- Ensure tires, wipers and fluids are appropriate for cold weather
- Use gentle braking and acceleration to maintain traction
With winter underway, the GTA will continue to see demanding driving conditions. A more cautious approach on expressways and arterial roads such as Steeles Avenue, Eglinton Avenue, Dundas Street, and Bayview Avenue helps everyone share the roads more safely.
